The History

AUTHENTICITY INSIDE A BOTTLE OF PERIQUITA

For over 160 years now, sitting around the table with our glasses brimming with emotion, we’ve been celebrating our authenticity. There's more than just good wine inside a bottle of Periquita. Inspired by Portuguese life, our pride and our work, every sip of this wine is a toast to everything Portuguese.

Tradition gave birth to a wine, a name, a brand. Respecting the past and its origins, Periquita is a wine with the spirit and soul of a unique people. A wine that has understood how to reinvent
and update itself without forgetting how and where it was born and where it all began.

THE ORIGIN

THE OLDEST PORTUGUESE TABLE WINE

Originating from the Cova da Periquita estate, where the oldest Portuguese table wine would later be produced, Periquita was one of the first wines to be bottled, because, from the perspective of José Maria da Fonseca, the sale of bottled wines avoided any adulteration and promoted the brand image of his company's products. He also foresaw the benefits of investing in the image, and of promoting and customizing products, without ever forgetting quality. A Parisian artist was commissioned to design Periquita’s labels. The bottles were manufactured in England and the corks hand-picked by a Catalán technician. The quality of Periquita soon became evident in the national market, making it one of José Maria da Fonseca’s most award-winning wines.

STRONG GROWTH

TRADITION GAVE BIRTH TO A WINE, A BRAND WITH STRONG GROWTH

Take the predominant variety Castelão (introduced into the Azeitão region by José Maria da Fonseca) and add a small percentage of Trincadeira (another traditional variety of the Setúbal Peninsula) and Aragonez, and you have Periquita red. A dark, strong-bodied(full-bodied?) wine which, 160 years after its creation by José Maria da Fonseca himself, maintains its vigor, strengthened in the 1950s when domestic demand began to recover the strong growth and dynamism that would once again make it a popular phenomenon both inside and outside Portugal.

1993

PERIQUITA BROTHERHOOD

PROMOTING THE PRESTIGE AND TRADITION OF WINE

The Periquita Brotherhood was created in 1993 to honour those who promote and enhance the prestige of the wine. The annals of the First Annual Gathering state that the Periquita Brotherhood was created, “to promote the prestige and tradition of the wine of that name, to impart its singular characteristics in aromas and flavours and to afford moments of glory to all its devotees”.

Since its inception, the birthday of José Maria da Fonseca – May 31st – has been the date for the Annual Gathering, a ceremony where new brethren are inducted. The Periquita Brotherhood numbers around 230 members, men and women from all walks of life, from 14 different countries.

TRADITION AND AUTHENTICITY

TRADITION AND AUTHENTICITY GO BEYOND BORDERS

Thanks to an excellent network of José Maria da Fonseca agents in key Brazilian trading ports, the wine began to be shipped abroad and gain popularity overseas. The first shipments of Periquita to Brazil were registered in 1881, which was Fonseca's main market. Nowadays, apart from the Brazillian market, the tradition of taking one of the most emblematic portuguese wines to foreign countries lives on. An historic and worldwide wine.
